Getting to the point
We learned the first few moves of the school’s spear form, and even though I was one of the majority who raised my hand to learn it, but honestly the spear, as a weapon, doesn’t really suit my personality. However, I do see it as a weapon that has a lot of insights to offer me.
Right off the bat I’ve been struggling with the high rising block and strike. I guess in my mind it feels counterintuitive as to how I would use such a weapon, but I can also understand what that movement is trying to teach. I’ll be really focusing on the release and vector of this movement this weekend and next little while. I’ve used other weapons meant for range, but the spear adds the extra layer of needing to be precise due to that small pointy bit on the end. Also having to be more mindful in the articulations of the spear, because it really matters which way the tip is pointed.
I am glad we are getting the opportunity to learn this form, and hopefully other forms that haven’t been taught in the curriculum for a while. Otherwise it would be knowledge that would be lost.
